WHAT IS SAFE PASS?

The course is designed to provide participants with a greater understanding of the hazards associated with working on construction sites and how accidents can be avoided.
Who must complete Safe Pass?
Safe Pass is a one-day safety awareness programme aimed at general construction workers, craft workers and ‘onsite’ security personnel in the construction industry. The course is designed to provide participants with a greater understanding of the hazards associated with working on construction sites and how accidents can be avoided.
Who SHOULD complete Safe Pass?
Anybody who is working in the construction industry, or who may be visiting on site.
Most contractors have a ‘Safe Pass only’ policy and will only allow those with valid Safe Pass cards onsite.
Safe Pass is an excellent independently accredited safety awareness programme for the construction industry. The aims of the programme are focussed mainly around health & safety awareness and the benefits include an improved safety culture, so even those who do not fall into the categories where Safe Pass is mandatory will benefit from the course.
What topics are covered during Safe Pass training?
● Health & Safety law
● Duties and responsibilities at work
● Safety Culture
● Accident reporting and prevention
● Work at heights
● Excavations, confined spaces, underground and overhead services
● Working with Electricity
● Use of Personal Protective Equipment
● Use of hand held equipment, tools & machinery
● Safe use of Vehicles
● Noise & Vibrations
● Manual Handling
● Health & Hygiene
Does Safe Pass have to be renewed?
All Safe Pass cards issued by Solas have an expiry date. Safepass awareness training must be renewed every 4 years.
Do I need Safe Pass to complete CSCS training?
Yes. However, construction professionals such as engineers, technicians etc who hold a higher level health & safety qualification such as IOSH Managing Safely in Construction may undertake CSCS training without holding a valid Safe Pass card. Please check with Solas in advance.
It is important to note that you will need to have your Safe Pass card with you at CSCS training. A letter of comfort from a training provider confirming you have completed Safe Pass training is no longer sufficient. Safe Pass cards generally take approximately one month to be issued following course completion (they can take longer). Therefore, you are advised to complete Safe Pass training at least a month in advance of scheduled CSCS training.
What criteria do candidates need to satisfy in order to attend Safe Pass training?
Candidates must be at least 16 years old.
As a general rule, candidates must have an Irish PPS number in order to attend training. There are special circumstances where we are permitted to accept candidates without Irish PPS numbers on to a Safe Pass course – please contact us for further details.
IS MY SAFE PASS CARD ACCEPTED IN THE UK?
The situation in the UK differs from that in Ireland. Some employers in the UK will allow Safe Pass cardholders on site and others will require a UK CSCS card. The best advice we can give is to check with your employer or the main contractor on site to establish what is required.
IS MY UK CSCS CARD ACCEPTED IN IRELAND?
The UK CSCS card is not seen as an equivalent qualification to the Irish Safe Pass course, and is not accepted on site in Ireland in lieu of Safe Pass. If you are going on site, you should check with your employer or the contractor in charge to establish the site requirements.
DO I NEED A SAFE PASS QUALIFICATION IN ORDER TO ATTEND CSCS TRAINING?
A valid CSCS Safe Pass card or Managing Safely in Construction card is a pre-requisite for most CSCS courses. A UK Safe Pass card will not be accepted in lieu of a Safe Pass card for the purposes of CSCS training.
